To continue our Japanese theme we are currently experimenting with new surface finishes for our tables - a variation on the technique of #ShouSugiBan aka #Yakisugi (charred cedar boards) is a must. We'll be trying it out on a coffee table or two first, mind - the thought of basically burning the whole top surface of one of our big dining tables is too scary! Photo credit: resawntimberco.com

So I've been hearing for years about the fact that the Japanese have a whole host of wood joints that just don't exist in this country (we're used to dovetails, mortice & tenon etc). I couldn't quite picture what these other types of joints would look like - but this video shows us just a few... wow!!

We also have a Google+ page as an alternative to the tyranny of Facebook (!), and – hey – we’ve got a YouTube channel booked for the day we set up the Handmade in Brighton YouTube channel – that day is looking quite distant at present, mind…
